An introduction to coaching and mentoring within education

This course will explore mentoring and coaching within the education sector and will help to explain the important differences between these two concepts. Delegates will explore how these support mechanisms are linked to staff welfare as well as the development and retention of talent within schools and other education settings.

Anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of mentoring and coaching as well as to understand the fundamental differences between these support mechanisms. We will explore how you can use mentoring and coaching to develop the staff within your organisation.

The content of the course will be adapted to the needs of delegates, which can include, higher education, further education, adult education, secondary and primary education, and alternative provision.

Mentoring and coaching trainee teachers

This course explains how we can support novice teachers that are undergoing their training to become qualified teachers during their professional placements.  It will explore how we can create the conditions for novice teachers to grow and develop into the expert colleagues that are ready to make significant contributions to our teams.

All staff that are working with trainee and student teachers within education (higher, further and school-based contexts) that wish to deepen their mentoring and coaching skills to support their growth and development into confident and competent teachers.

In this course you will learn about:

  • Understanding the novice teacher, meeting the needs of the novice teacher
  • Cognitive load and the novice teacher
  • Setting the initial expectations and ground rules of a productive mentoring relationship,
  • Contracting and ethics
  • Understanding the internal challenges that novice teachers face
  • Supporting the trainee teacher to establish themselves within their placement schools.
  • Building the confidence of novice teachers to explore and develop their practice
  • Facilitating the professional growth of novice teachers

Mentoring and coaching early career teachers

This course is designed for teachers that are undertaking the mentoring role for teachers that have recently gained Qualified Teacher Status and are starting their statutory induction. The course will explore how to establish a productive working relationship and to support the development of your new colleague.

All staff that are working with Early Career Teachers within England and those working with qualified teachers who are just starting their careers as teachers internationally.

In this course you will learn about:

  • Understanding the needs of the Early Careers Teacher
  • Cognitive load and the Early Careers Teacher
  • Building a productive working relationship with your new member of staff
  • Contracting and ethical considerations
  • Transitioning from novice teacher to employment – exploring the challenges and opportunities
  • Planning for and leading mentoring meetings
  • Setting targets and goals
  • When to mentor and when to coach.

Mentoring and coaching overseas trained teachers

This course is designed for teachers that are undertaking the mentoring or coaching role for overseas qualified teachers that have recently gained employment in English schools.  The course will explore how to establish a productive working relationship and to support the development of your new colleague.

All staff that are working with Early Career Teachers within England and those working with qualified teachers who are just starting their careers as teachers internationally.

In this course you will learn about:

  • Understanding the needs of overseas trained teachers who are new to English schools
  • Cognitive and cultural overload – helping them to adjust
  • Building a productive working relationship with your new colleague
  • Contracting and ethical considerations
  • Transitioning from “novice” teacher to effective colleague – exploring the challenges and opportunities
  • Planning for and leading mentoring and support meetings
  • Setting targets and goals
  • When to mentor and when to coach.
